THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF REBUILD KITS TO CHOOSE FROM BUT... WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

NEVER ORDER A REBUILD KIT UNTIL THE POWERHEAD HAS BEEN REMOVED AND DISASSEMBLED. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED.

SOMETIMES A MOTOR CAN STILL RUN BUT NEEDS MORE EXTENSIVE REPAIRS THAN WHAT YOU MAY ANTICIPATE. RETURNING PARTS AND RE-ORDERING THEM TAKES TIME AND WASTES MONEY. LET'S WORK TOGETHER AND GET THE JOB DONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

MY MOTOR WAS RUNNING BEFORE I DISASSEMBLED IT AND THE PISTONS DO NOT APPEAR WORN..... CAN I GET AWAY WITH USING JUST A REFRESHER KIT?

INSPECT THE BORES CAREFULY AND LOOK FOR ANY SIGNS OF SCORING. IF YOU CAN FEEL ANY SCORING WITH YOUR FINGERNAILS THAN YOU NEED TO HAVE IT BORED. IF THERE IS NO SCORING THEN YOU MAY HONE THE CYLINDERS AND GO WITH A REFRESHER KIT. THIS KIT IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT REPLACE THE PISTONS AND SOME OF THE BEARINGS. YOU WILL NOT REPLACE THE WRIST PIN BEARINGS BECAUSE THERE IS NO NEED TO TAKE THE PISTONS OFF THE RODS. YOU WILL REPLACE THE LOWER ROD BEARINGS BECAUSE YOU ALREADY HAVE THE RODS REMOVED FROM THE CRANK SHAFT. YOU WILL ALSO REPLACE THE LOWER MAIN BEARING BECAUSE IT IS A BALL BEARING WITH LITTLE CONTACT AREA AND IS A COMON POINT OF FAILURE. IT IS BEST YOU REPLACE THESE THINGS AT THIS TIME BECAUSE YOU ARE ABOUT TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR MOTOR. THE OTHER MAIN BEARINGS WILL BE IN GOOD CONDITION AS LONG AS THE CRANK SHAFT LOOKS LIKE THERE IS NO PITTING OR SCORING.

ONE OR MORE OF MY CYLINDERS NEEDS TO BE BORED...

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

THE FIRST THING YOU NEED IS A QUALIFIED MACHINE SHOP THAT HAS PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE WITH OUTBOARD POWERHEAD BLOCKS. DON'T BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT THAT THE RACE CAR BUILDER THAT LIVES NEXT DOOR TO YOU CAN'T DO THE JOB. ALL 2 STROKE POWERHEADS HAVE BLIND HOLES AND MUST BE BORED ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM. THEN YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE CONDITION OF YOUR CRANK SHAFT AND CONNECTING RODS. IF THEY LOOK GOOD YOU MAY WANT TO SAVE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE AND GO WITH A REBUILD KIT. THE REBUILD KIT COMES WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED BUT YOU WILL REUSE YOUR TOP AND CENTER MAIN BEARINGS. YOU ALSO WILL REUSE THE CAGES FOR YOUR ROD BEARINGS. CHANGING THE BEARINGS IN THE CAGES IS AS EASY AS 1-2-3 AND THE PRICE OF REPLACING THE CAGES IS STEEP. CAGES DO NOT WEAR OUT!
